MANILA, Philippines — Torrential rains are expected to drench parts of northern and western Philippines as Tropical Cyclone Crising and the southwest monsoon continue to affect the country, the state weather bureau warned Saturday morning.
In Weather Advisory No. 15 issued at 5 a.m., the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said Crising is bringing more than 200 millimeters of rain to Apayao, Abra, Ilocos Norte, and Ilocos Sur on Saturday, July 19. These areas are likely to experience severe flooding and landslides.
Rainfall between 100 and 200 millimeters is also expected today in Cagayan, Batanes, Benguet, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Ifugao, and La Union. Pagasa said numerous flooding events are likely in these areas, especially in urbanized, low-lying communities or those near rivers. Landslides are also possible in moderately to highly susceptible areas.
Lighter rainfall, between 50 and 100 millimeters, is forecast for Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya, and Quirino. On Sunday, July 20, only Ilocos Norte is expected to receive this level of rainfall.
Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon, or habagat, is also bringing heavy rainfall to western parts of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindoro. On Saturday, Zambales, Bataan, Tarlac, Pampanga, Palawan, Occidental Mindoro, and Antique could receive 100 to 200 millimeters of rain. Metro Manila and nearby provinces such as Pangasinan, Nueva Ecija, Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, and Rizal, along with several provinces in Visayas and Mindoro, are forecast to receive 50 to 100 millimeters of rain.
By Sunday, the monsoon rains will persist in Zambales, Bataan, and Occidental Mindoro (100–200 mm) and continue to affect Metro Manila, parts of Central Luzon, some parts of Mimaropa, and portions of Visayas (50–100 mm). On Monday, July 21, Zambales, Bataan, and Occidental Mindoro remain under the threat of localized flooding and landslides. /dm
